Rhinovirus Hospitalization and Investigation of Nasal-airway Omics (RHINO) Study

Study Eligibility

The RHINO Study is enrolling children in three study groups. Please review the eligibility requirements below. Contact the study team if you are interested in enrolling your child.

Hospital Group

Your child may be eligible if they were:

  • Admitted to American Family Children’s Hospital within the past 24 hours
  • Diagnosed with bronchiolitis, asthma exacerbation, or pneumonia OR are an infant under 6 months of age with a fever or respiratory symptoms

Study procedures

  • Allow our team to review your child’s medical chart
  • Obtain two nose swabs
  • If your child has pneumonia, these additional samples may be obtained:
    • Provide a small blood sample (optional)
    • Provide a cough sample (optional)
    • Provide leftover samples collected during your child’s hospital stay, along with additional nose swabs

Community Group (12–36 months)

Your child may be eligible if they are:

  • 12–36 months old at the first study visit
  • Currently have a UW Health primary care provider
  • Generally in good health
  • Able to participate for three years

Study procedures

  • Answer questions about your child’s health
  • Complete one study visit in person at University Hospital per year
  • Obtain two nose swabs and fill out two online surveys when your child is sick
  • Obtain two nose swabs and complete one online survey four times each year when your child is healthy

Incentive

Families will be paid $50 at enrollment, $20 for each sample collection time point, and a $50 completion bonus

Community Group (5–17 years old)

Your child may be eligible if they are:

  • 5–17 years old
  • Currently have a UW Health primary care provider
  • Generally in good health
  • Able to participate for three years

Study procedures

  • Answer questions about your child’s health
  • Complete one study visit in person at University Hospital
  • Obtain nose swabs as needed for our study when your child is healthy

Incentive

Families will be paid $20 for each sample collection point.
